UK Condemns Houthi Attacks in the Red Sea at UN Security Council

In a recent statement at the UN Security Council, UK Ambassador Barbara Woodward strongly condemned the Houthi militants’ illegal and unjustified attacks in the Red Sea. The Ambassador highlighted a series of aggressive actions by the Houthis, including an attack on UK and US naval vessels on January 9.

Houthi attacks on vessels in the Red Sea must stop.

“The United Kingdom and this Council have consistently condemned the illegal and unjustified attacks in the Red Sea by the Houthi militants,” Woodward stated.

In response to the escalating threat, the UK, alongside the United States and with the support of several other nations, carried out targeted strikes against Houthi military facilities in Yemen. These strikes were described as “limited, necessary, and proportionate action in self-defense.”

Woodward emphasized the care taken to minimize civilian risks during the operation. Despite the Council’s demand for the Houthis to cease their attacks, over 100 drone and missile attacks have been launched since November, posing significant risks to innocent lives and global economic stability.

“The attacks by Houthis on vessels in the Red Sea must stop,” Woodward declared, urging the Houthis to deescalate the situation.

The UK remains committed to maintaining freedom of navigation and defending international trade, as protected by international law. The Ambassador’s full statement and a summary of the UK’s legal position on the strikes have been reported to the Council, aligning with Article 51 of the UN Charter.

The international community and the Security Council are urged to work together to combat this threat and de-escalate regional tensions.
